History of Dublin Christian Mission

Dublin Christian Mission has been serving the people of Dublin for nearly two centuries. Founded in 1828 as the Dublin City Mission, it holds the distinction of being the second-oldest independent city mission in the world. Over the years, the mission expanded its outreach and, in 1965, merged with the Dublin Medical Mission (established in 1891) and the Dublin Mission (founded in 1953) to form what is now Dublin Christian Mission.

Since its inception, the mission has been dedicated to bringing hope and transformation to those in need. While its early years were focused primarily on evangelism and practical aid, the mission has since grown to encompass a broad range of ministries, from youth and community outreach to homeless support and Christian discipleship. Today, the mission continues to stand as a beacon of faith, compassion, and service in the heart of Ireland’s capital.

Our Work in the Community

Much of Dublin Christian Mission’s work takes place at its primary hub, located at 5/6 Chancery Place, Dublin 7, adjacent to the historic Four Courts. Here, we run a variety of programmes aimed at supporting local children, youth, and families.

Our community centre serves as a safe and welcoming space where people can find support, connection, and encouragement. It also houses a food bank and a social enterprise café, both of which provide practical assistance to those facing hardship.

The Lighthouse: Serving Those in Need

One of our most vital ministries is The Light House, located at 28 Pearse Street, Dublin 2. Open seven days a week, The Light House serves those affected by hunger and homelessness, offering freshly prepared hot meals, clothing, hygiene supplies, sleeping bags, and essential services such as barbershop visits, addiction referrals, and medical assistance.

Every service we provide is free of charge, given with dignity and respect. We believe in building genuine relationships with those we serve, addressing not only their physical needs but also their emotional and spiritual well-being.

A Mission of Faith and Love

As a non-denominational Christian organisation, Dublin Christian Mission is rooted in the love of Jesus Christ. Our goal is simple: to meet the physical and spiritual needs of our community. We work with people from all walks of life, many of whom face poverty, addiction, and homelessness. Through our ministries, we seek to bring hope, healing, and transformation to individuals and families across Dublin’s inner city.

We believe that every person is made in the image of God and deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. That is why we extend our support to all, regardless of their background or beliefs. Our mission is not just to provide temporary relief but to walk alongside people on their journey toward a better future.
